Venice Beach Circus
About This Project
The Venice Circus Mural is a 250 foot public artwork honoring the deep circus heritage of Venice, Florida, a city long connected to the legacy of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. Created through a collaboration between contemporary mural artist Mark Francis of Bulk Styles and muralist Sami Makela, the project celebrates decades of performance history, animal acts, and the community that embraced circus culture as part of its identity.
Stretching across an expansive exterior wall, the mural unfolds as a vibrant visual narrative filled with dynamic performers, expressive animals, vintage circus iconography, and bold typography. Striking red and gold tent motifs anchor the composition, while rich blues and dramatic lighting effects create depth and movement. Each section transitions seamlessly into the next, allowing the artwork to read as one cohesive story rather than isolated scenes.
Mark's contribution to the mural reflects his signature attention to realism, expressive character work, and large scale composition. Working alongside Sami Makela, the artists blended spray paint and traditional brush techniques to balance painterly detail with street art energy. Durable, UV protected materials were used to ensure the mural withstands Florida's climate while preserving its vibrancy for years to come.
Supported by local beautification initiatives and community fundraising efforts, the Venice Circus Mural stands as a collaborative cultural landmark. More than a decorative installation, the project serves as a tribute to local history and shared memory, transforming a public wall into a powerful celebration of Venice's unique identity and reinforcing Bulk Styles' commitment to impactful, community driven mural work.

Design Concept
Developing the Artwork
The Venice Circus Mural began with a shared vision to create a large scale public artwork that honored the city's deep connection to circus history. Early planning focused on researching Venice's ties to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, ensuring the mural would feel historically rooted while remaining visually dynamic and contemporary. The goal was to create a piece that celebrated nostalgia, performance, and community pride across an expansive 250 foot surface.
During the design phase, composition was carefully structured to allow multiple scenes to unfold naturally along the length of the wall. Iconic circus imagery such as performers, animals, and bold tent patterns were arranged to create rhythm and visual continuity. Strong red and gold striping anchored the piece, while deep blues and dramatic highlights added contrast and depth. Each section was mapped to transition seamlessly into the next, maintaining a cohesive narrative across the full span.
Execution required detailed scaling, surface preparation, and coordination between both artists. Spray paint and traditional brush techniques were layered to achieve both fine realism and expressive movement. Because of Florida's intense sun and weather exposure, durable exterior materials and UV protective finishes were used to preserve color integrity and long term structural quality.
From concept sketches through final detailing, the Venice Circus Mural stands as a collaborative public landmark. The finished work not only enhances the surrounding space visually but also preserves a meaningful chapter of local history, transforming a long exterior wall into a vibrant tribute that connects art, heritage, and community storytelling in one unified installation.
