Project

Paws on the Avenue

About This Project

Completed in 2018, this community mural in Lake Worth Beach was created by Mark Francis, professionally known as Bulk Styles, in partnership with Galera Collective and Paws on the Avenue. The project celebrated Paws on the Avenue's 20 years of dedication to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals throughout Palm Beach County. Designed as both a tribute and a public awareness piece, the mural uses bold portraiture and vibrant color to spotlight the importance of animal welfare within the community.

The composition features two large scale animal portraits set against clean circular backdrops, creating a strong visual presence along the street. The expressive detailing and rich color contrasts draw viewers in, encouraging connection and reflection. Positioned in a highly visible public space, the mural serves as a daily reminder of the organization's mission and the role community support plays in animal rescue efforts.

The project carries deep personal meaning for Mark, as the imagery was inspired by his late dog Shadow and his cat Mo. By incorporating elements rooted in his own life, he blended personal storytelling with a broader nonprofit cause, reinforcing the emotional bond between people and their pets. The result is a mural that feels intimate while remaining accessible and community focused.

Today, the Lake Worth Beach mural stands as a lasting tribute to compassion, rescue advocacy, and responsible pet ownership. It demonstrates how public art can elevate nonprofit visibility, strengthen community ties, and transform a simple wall into a powerful symbol of care and connection.

Design Concept

Developing the Artwork

The Paws on the Avenue mural began with a shared vision to create a public artwork that would both celebrate the organization's 20 year milestone and amplify awareness around animal rescue in Palm Beach County. Early discussions centered on developing imagery that felt heartfelt, approachable, and visually impactful within the Lake Worth Beach streetscape. The goal was to design a mural that could resonate emotionally while remaining bold and highly visible from a distance.

During the design phase, large scale animal portraiture was chosen as the focal point to create immediate connection with viewers. Clean circular color fields were incorporated behind each subject to provide contrast against the building's exterior and to frame the animals with clarity and strength. Careful attention was given to lighting, eye detail, and expressive features to ensure the portraits conveyed warmth, personality, and presence.

Before painting began, the wall surface was properly prepared to ensure durability in Florida's climate. The composition was scaled accurately across the façade to maintain proportion and balance. Layered spray techniques and controlled brushwork were used to build depth in the fur textures, highlights, and shadows, while high quality exterior materials were selected to preserve color vibrancy over time.

From initial concept sketches through final protective finishing, the mural was executed with both artistic integrity and long term impact in mind. The completed installation not only commemorates Paws on the Avenue's legacy but also demonstrates how thoughtfully designed nonprofit murals can strengthen community awareness and create meaningful public landmarks rooted in compassion.

The Impact of the Artwork

Murals inside hospitality environments often become a defining feature of the space. Guests naturally gravitate toward bold artwork, making it a popular backdrop for photos and social media.

For Mack House Brew Pub, the mural contributes to the overall atmosphere of the brewery while reinforcing the creative and energetic personality of the brand.

Large scale artwork helps businesses create environments that feel distinctive and memorable. The mural now serves as a visual centerpiece within the brewery space.
