SunFest Music Festival
About This Project
From 2017 through 2019, Mark Francis, also known as Bulk Styles, was invited to serve as a live painting artist at SunFest Music Festival in West Palm Beach, Florida. As one of the largest waterfront music and arts festivals in the Southeast, SunFest attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year, creating a high energy environment where music, culture, and visual art intersect.
During his three consecutive appearances, Mark created original large scale paintings live on site, allowing festivalgoers to witness the full evolution of each piece in real time. The 2018 sea turtle mural captured the essence of South Florida's coastal identity, blending marine life with vibrant sunlit tones inspired by the Atlantic shoreline. In 2019, a bold flamingo composition embraced tropical color, movement, and expressive detail, reflecting both the rhythm of the music and the unmistakable spirit of Palm Beach County.
Painting outdoors during a multi day festival presents unique challenges including heat, humidity, wind, and unpredictable weather. Each mural required adaptability, precision, and endurance while maintaining the quality and depth that defines the Bulk Styles aesthetic. The live format transformed the act of painting into a public performance, inviting conversation, curiosity, and direct audience engagement throughout the process.
Returning to SunFest for three consecutive years reflects both the strength of the collaboration and the impact of live art within large scale cultural events. These projects highlight Mark Francis' experience working in major festival environments and demonstrate how live painting can energize public spaces, connect with diverse audiences, and create lasting visual impressions long after the music ends.

Design Concept
Developing the Artwork
Each SunFest mural began with a focus on place. Because the festival sits along the West Palm Beach waterfront, early concept development centered around imagery that felt rooted in South Florida's coastal identity. Marine life, tropical wildlife, bold sunlight, and fluid movement became the foundation of the compositions. The goal was not only to create a visually striking piece, but to reflect the environment surrounding the festival grounds and resonate with both locals and visitors.
Once the direction was established, the compositions were structured for high visibility within a crowded festival setting. Strong silhouettes, exaggerated perspective, and vibrant color blocking ensured that each piece could command attention from a distance while still holding detail up close. Saturated oranges, teals, yellows, and reds were layered intentionally to echo both the tropical climate and the high energy rhythm of live music playing throughout the weekend.
Execution required adaptability. Painting outdoors during a multi day waterfront festival meant navigating heat, humidity, wind, and shifting light conditions. Surfaces were prepared in advance, and the scaling process was carefully mapped to maintain proportion across large panels. Layer by layer, spray paint, controlled fades, line work, and highlights built depth and movement, allowing each mural to evolve organically while maintaining structural clarity.
From first sketch to final detail, the SunFest murals demonstrate how live painting operates as both visual art and performance. The audience became part of the creative process, witnessing the transformation of blank panels into fully realized works of art. The completed pieces not only elevated the festival environment during the event, but also reinforced the power of live art to create immersive, memorable experiences within large scale public celebrations.

The Impact of the Artwork
Murals inside hospitality environments often become a defining feature of the space. Guests naturally gravitate toward bold artwork, making it a popular backdrop for photos and social media.
For Mack House Brew Pub, the mural contributes to the overall atmosphere of the brewery while reinforcing the creative and energetic personality of the brand.
Large scale artwork helps businesses create environments that feel distinctive and memorable. The mural now serves as a visual centerpiece within the brewery space.
